'You are not alone. We're here to help you.': San Antonio organization providing resources to more veterans amid pandemic

SAN ANTONIO – Retired U.S. Army Col. Sergio Dickerson said some veterans in the Bexar County area have ended up living on the streets due to challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Many of these veterans, for example, were unemployed, and so couldn’t pay their apartments or homes and then found themselves on the streets for the very first time,” Dickerson said.
Dickerson is with the American GI Forum National Veterans Outreach Program, a local organization that provides housing, mental health and employment services to veterans.
“We had a situation during the pandemic that we had a lot of veterans seek our services,” Dickerson said. ....

Mei Linn N. Park of the Thompson School of Social Work & Public Health conducted narrative interviews and analyzed the collected stories of four families, thematically utilizing a family resiliency framework. Through in-depth, qualitative interviews, researchers provided space for families to tell their stories about their challenges, strengths and protective factors related to being houseless.
Protective and resilience factors
The results were consistent with the hypothesized theoretical framework, which identified protective and resilience factors, such as social support, initiative, insight, spirituality, creativity, commitment and hope. In addition to these themes, the study revealed a preference for the term “houseless” over “homeless,” a predominant connection to the ʻāina (land) and the impact of trauma. ....

While most Torontonians are following public health orders to stay home, many of the city’s homeless are still trying to find one.
Toronto Tiny Shelters, an organization fronted by Khaleel Seivwright, a carpenter from Scarborough, Ont., has been constructing shelters since last September to help those without a place to go. But the project has run into opposition from the City of Toronto, which has applied for an injunction with the Ontario Superior Court to forbid placing such structures on city property. It has cited “serious safety concerns,” including fires and lack of access to water and sanitation, as well as bylaws that prohib ....
