Utah's homeless issue is complex, but part of the solution needs to be efficient and reliable shelter.

Robert Gehrke: Utah needs a workable, certain path for homeless residents, even if that means another shelter
(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) Robert Gehrke.
  | April 5, 2021, 12:04 p.m.
The pandemic has thrown everything about our lives into turmoil, and how we help homeless Utahns is no exception.
This past year, providers scrambled to accommodate the need to socially distance. They reduced beds at the resource centers and lined up overflow shelters and hotel rooms, a patchwork of improvised solutions to keep people safe from the elements and the coronavirus.
They managed to pull it off, to a remarkable degree.
And, while COVID-19 certainly complicated things, it’s not all that different from where we were a year prior, when a winter overflow shelter had to be set up at the old Deseret Industries building in Sugar House. ....

American pop superstar Billie Eilish has many sides to her personality. The 19-year-old pop singer took an active part in humanitarian efforts alongside her mother Maggie Baird on March 29. They provided food, only the vegan one, to the homeless.
The award-winning singer enthusiastically advocates plant-based eating while giving her mother a helping hand in her charitable organization Support + Feed.
The singer, teaming up with her mother, got together with other fellow vegans Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara to provide vegan food to My Friend’s Place, a non-profit dedicated to helping homeless youth.
The charitable organization was launched to help people cope with their daily meals necessities during the COVID-19 response effort. However, one year into the humanitarian efforts, the Support + Feed marked its first anniversary. ....

ETSU group works to vaccinate homeless

Across the nation, people experiencing homelessness are often left out of states’ COVID-19 vaccine rollout plans — including Tennessee’s.
That left the task of vaccinating the state’s nearly 7,500 homeless people up to clinics and other groups in communities across the state, even though people experiencing homelessness, particularly those who are unsheltered, are considered higher risk for COVID-19 due to myriad factors including age and underlying health conditions.
For the hundreds of people without homes in Northeast Tennessee, it meant they were once again left out in the cold.
That’s why the East Tennessee State University Street Medicine Interest Group, or SMIG, an inter-professional group of students formed in 2019 to help the region’s homeless population, stepped in. On Saturday, March 20, they administered 20 doses of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine at a pop-up event outside Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church. ....

LAS VEGAS (KTNV) - A Las Vegas man says he had no choice but to move into his van, rather than continuing to rack up debt, after he struggled to get financial assistance during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Brian Ward worked as a delivery driver prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, but health concerns forced him to step away from his job last March. He’s been applying for financial help from the state of Nevada ever since but says his applications for Pandemic Unemployment Assistance and the Cares Housing Assistance Program have largely gone unanswered. ....
