Why do people create fake online dating profiles?

By Leanne Wilson
Feb 20, 2021 1:44 PM
We live in a time where it’s normal to build online networks that include personal connections. But in today’s social strategy, how do we know that anyone is who they claim to be?
And most importantly, are we able to catch a catfish if one swam into our network?

Brenton Shea is currently the director of the Campus Community Police Services at Western University.
He says
“Catfishing is generally when people create fake identities generally to use for luring people into relationships or trying to gather information about somebody. It is a concern, obviously these people will copy somebody else’s identity. It’s not just necessarily making up an identity, they may even copy an existing like a real person’s identity and use a real person’s photo placing it as themselves.”

Blackfriars Bridge is only open to pedestrians but will it remain that way?

By Victoria Newman

After the reconstruction of Blackfriars Bridge, some believed that the use of the bridge would resume to what it had previously been- for pedestrians and cars. But that was not the case. As many know, currently, Blackfriars Bridge is only open for pedestrians.
“Right now and throughout the COVID pandemic, it has been closed to motor vehicles, and designated as a shared space for pedestrians and bicyclists,” said Doug MacRae, the Director of Roads and Transportation for the City of London.
This is because in the early days of COVID, the city did a review of “pinch points” within the transportation network in the city of London. They saw that there was a focus on bridges since social distancing was of utmost importance for everyone and their well-being.

How you can celebrate Canada's Agriculture Day

This February 23rd will mark Canada’s Agriculture Day. A day which marks a special celebration for farmers. The day was originally started in 2016, and has since evolved into a day where people all across Canada are encouraged to celebrate Canadian agriculture in any way possible.
But what can you do to celebrate Canadian agriculture?
Cook a meal featuring all-Canadian products!
If you’re looking for a mouthwatering way to celebrate, why not try cooking an all-Canadian meal? The Middlesex Federation of Agriculture is going to be handing out burger buns on Saturday, February 20 at Dorchester Foodland, Lucan Foodland, Parkhill Foodland and Glencoe Foodland. The Ontario Federation of Agriculture is encouraging those who receive the buns, and anybody else, to take part in the #BurgersUpOnt challenge. The challenge tasks participants with sourcing local ground meat, meat alternatives, produce, baked goods, preserves, condiments and cheese. The challenge then asks participants to post the photo online with the hashtag #BurgersUpOnt as well as tag the locations where you got your locally sourced ingredients. This is a fun and delicious way to support local agriculture and your local businesses. If a burger isn’t for you, you can also make something as simple as Canadian eggs for breakfast!

The London Police Services Board met virtually and provided an update on a number of crucial topics relevant to the city. The meeting was attended by police officials, along with Mayor Ed Holder and Ward 4 Councilor Jesse Helmer.
Deputy Chief Patricia McIntyre gave insight into London in terms of sexual assault cases, declaring 436 new incidents. Slighty more than 200 of these are currently worthy of review, but are being backlogged as a result of the pandemic. COVID-19 related restrictions such as being unable to meet face-to-face were cited as being the main reason so many cases are currently not being reviewed.

Health Unit issues Cold Weather Alert

Cold temperatures and bitter winds have prompted the Middlesex-London Health Unit (MLHU) to issue a Cold Weather Alert for the area.
After a wicked winter storm that left nearly 25 cm of snow on the ground, Environment Canada is now forecasting subfreezing temperatures with gusting winds for Tuesday night.
The current Environment Canada forecast calls for windchill values as low as -18C with plenty of flurries and gusting winds. Overnight, London is expected to see a low of -19C with windchill values as low as -23.
While daytime temperatures on Wednesday are expected to reach a high of -6C, the Cold Weather Alert will remain in place, as windchill values are predicted to be as low as -26 in the morning.

Teeple Terrace construction site allows workers more than two months after collapse takes two lives

By Vasilios Bellos
Feb 17, 2021 9:33 AM
Construction has resumed at 555 Teeple Terrace, the site which partially collapsed on Dec. 11th of last year. Two construction workers, John Martens, 21, and Henry Harder, 26 lost their lives in the collapse. 5 other workers were also injured and taken to hospital. The Ministry of Labor, Training, and Skills Development launched an investigation within days of the partial collapse.
The developer of the project is the Brock Development Group of London, also referred to as the Nest on Wonderland.
An investigation into the collapse is ongoing. A spokesperson has stated that individuals from the Ministry of Labor currently have control over the collapsed portion of the building. Approximately forty workers have described hearing freshly poured concrete on the fourth floor collapse, possibly what lead to the devastation.

Spirituality – is it a trend?

By Ryann Scheib

In recent years, the practice of spirituality and mindfulness has become more popular. The act of breath work and meditation has become commonly recommended and shared on social media to help ease the body and mind, and reduce stress.
Dianne Ellis, HeartMind Coach
Dianne Ellis is a Heartmind Coach who has been teaching meditation and life coaching services for over 20 years. She’s noticed a spike in interest more recently, about five years ago. Ellis believes it could be seen as a trend, but labels the pandemic as another aspect.
“With the pandemic hitting the way it is, it’s going to challenge a few people in how they cope with stress,” she says. “A lot of people choose different modalities, and mindfulness is one of them.”
