The West Coast town of Reefton - the first place in New Zealand to be lit by electricity - has a new pub light for its 150th birthday.
The lantern-shaped light with gold lettering was formally opened yesterday by the mayor of Buller, Jamie Cleine, outside Wilson's Hotel, which has been pouring drinks since 1873.
Gwen Gardner, a fourth generation resident of Reefton and driving force behind the project, cut the ribbon to "go down in history" as one local put it.

Attending the 150th anniversary of the Parliamentary Press Gallery were Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, along with former prime ministers Sir John Key, Sir Bill English, Sir Geoffrey Palmer, Helen Clark and Jim Bolger.

March 2025 will see Woodville will turn 150 years young and already excitement is building.
Woodville Districts Vision chairwoman Vicky Tomlinson said a 150th organising committee of six people has been set up to co-ordinate all events and projects for the celebration.
"The committee is getting under way now so there is plenty of time to secure all the needed sponsorship, permission and logistics," Tomlinson said.
The committee was looking for input from the community and groups.

Indian Embassy in Madagascar organises Gandhi Katha to celebrate Mahatma Gandhi's 150th birth anniversary

(MENAFN - Trend News Agency) As a part of the celebrations of the grand finale of the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, Indian Embassy in Antananarivo organised a Gandhi Katha on the theme 'The Oceanic Gandhi' by renowned Gandhian Scholar Professor Makarand Paranjape, Director of the Indian Institute of Advanced Study.
The event was attended by participants from Madagascar and Comoros and was telecasted live on the Facebook page of the Embassy.
Professor Paranjape explained about the influences of oceans on the life of Mahatma Gandhi both metaphorically and literally. Mahatma Gandhi travelled as a young student across the Indian Ocean and through Atlantic Ocean to England for studying law. Thereafter he came back to India, only to travel to South Africa in 1893. He came back to India in 1915.
