months, sometimes even years, to courting voters in the state that has the 31st largest population. >> democrats in iowa are beginning a series of party caucuses, which takes the place of a primary there. >> monday when iowa begins the actual process of selecting a president. >> well, election literally begins tonight. the place, iowa. >> since the caucuses began back in 1972, these 20 candidates have claimed victory. whether those politicians went on to become those party's nominee depends a little bit on which party they come from. for democrats, these seven eventually saw their names appear on the general election ballot. for republicans, only four have won iowa and gone on to win the nomination. that includes a 20-year gap between george w. bush and donald trump. as for actually going from a win in iowa to a seat in the oval office, only these three, jimmy carter, barack obama, and george w. bush, have won a contested caucus in iowa and then become

president. what iowa does often produce is surprises. it has always been that way. in 1972, george mcgovern was a long shot senator from south dakota who used his second place finish in iowa to propel him to the democratic nomination. in 1980, ronald reagan was considered such a lock that he skipped the last debate. the winner of the republican caucus that year turned out to be george h.w. bush, getting him enough attention to land him a spot on the ticket as vice president. in 2004, howard dean's fall from early front runner to third place prompted this infamous scream in des moines right after he lost the caucuses. he was trying to keep his disappointed supporters fired up. >> we're going to washington, d.c. to take back the white house! >> the flip side of that story would be jimmy carter, who actually got fewer votes than people who chose uncommitted, but he used iowa as a spring

but we wanted to talk to you about that because the year that you won mitt romney came in second place and the eventual nominee john mccain came in 4th. an interesting nugget here since 1972, only three caucus winners have gone on to become president. so the question this morning is how much does iowa caucus really matter? >> well, carley, i think a lot of people need to understand that the caucus winner is probably not the real story. the story is who are the caucus losers. because, what iowa does more than it catapults a person to the presidency it, actually starts eliminating people in the demolition derby called the primary. and so there are going to be some people who probably will not get out of iowa. not because of the snow, but because of the lack of votes which means the lack of funds going forward. so, if you look back through those caucuses, whether it's 08, 12, 16, what it truly means is

Decision 2024 Primaries Caucuses

to take on trump. it's also important to remember that we are technically just at the beginning here. both are happening in the caucus tonight. iowa is the final decider for who the nominee will be. on three presidents since 1972 won their iowa caucuses. jimmy carter in 1976, barack obama in 2008, i was there for that one. and george w. bush in 2000. and there are a few iowa losers who went on to win, ronald reagan in 1980, george h. w. bush in 1988, and of course donald trump in 2006. specifically on the republican side, it may be losing importance because the last three eventual gop nominees all lost the iowa caucuses. and trump hasn't exactly spent a lot of time and energy himself in the state, even if it's organization has improved from the last time. but there are also a few factors that don't always fully show up in the polls that are important to talk about and really pay attention to. according to an nbc news tally, since may 23rd of last year,

tomorrow, iowa voters will have to brave dangerous, potentially life-threatening cold to go to the caucuses. we checked the highs in des moines for every caucus day since the first one in 1972. as you can see on your screen, tomorrow is shaping up to be the coldest ever. our meteorologist is tracking just how bad it's going to get. tell us, alison. >> that's right. i think is to note, iowans are hardy people, but these temperatures are extreme, even for them. when we look at the highs, you're talking 4 degrees below zero. not much better in davenport with just 3 below zero for the high. one thing they all have in common, these temperatures are about 30 degrees below normal, even for this time of year. to put this in perspective, we know it's a cold place. but even the high, tomorrow of minus 4 in des moines, is going to be colder than the high in anchorage, alaska.
