The DRDO's (Defence Research and Development Organisation) newly launched anti-COVID medicine, 2-deoxy-D-glucose is being hailed as an innovative holy grail for COVID patients in India right now, who are currently battling for their lives and scouring for oxygen amidst a deadly grasp of the second wave of infections.
The innovative therapeutic drug, which has been launched for use today (May 17) is also said to hasten recovery timelines. But how effective is it really? Can all COVID-19 patients take it? Here's a brief explainer on the same.
What do we know about the drug, 2-deoxy-D-glucose?
2-deoxy-D-glucose is the first-ever 'fully homegrown' anti-COVID medicine which has been developed in India. According to researchers, it is one of the first therapeutic COVID-19 drugs which works to stop viral growth in the body, reduce the need for external oxygen.

First batch of 2-DG dedicated to nation
The first batch of the anti-Covid drug 2-DG (2-deoxy-D-glucose), developed by the Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Allied Sciences (INMAS) scientists jointly with their counterparts at Dr Reddy’s Laboratories in Hyderabad, was dedicated to the nation by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday.
The INMAS, a lab under the Defence Research and Development Organisation, had developed the molecule for treating cancer, but it has not been repurposed for treating Covid-19 infection as adjuvant as well as standalone medication.

The first batch of the adjunct COVID therapy drug, 2-deoxy-D-glucose (2-DG) — developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) along with Dr Reddy’s Laboratories (DRL), Hyderabad — was on Monday released for emergency use. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh formally handed over the drug to Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan.
“One box each of the sachets of the drug were handed over to Dr. Randeep Guleria, Director All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and Lt. Gen. Sunil Kant of Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS). More will be handed over to different hospitals across the country for emergency use,” a Defence Ministry statement said.

2-deoxy-D-glucose: DRDO's anti-COVID-19 drug is safe, will help patients recover faster, says INMAS scientist

New Delhi: Dr Sudhir Chandna, Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Allied Sciences (INMAS) scientist has said the recently approved anti-COVID-19 drug 2-deoxy-D-glucose (2-DG) is completely safe and will help patients recover faster.
"During clinical trials, it has yielded an effective result in curing patients infected with COVID-19. The medicine has gone through clinical trials on around 110 patients in the second phase. In the third phase, it was tried on 220 patients. It has shown better efficacy in phase two itself as compared to the standard care," Dr Chandna said.
"Recovery was two to three days faster for COVID-19 patients," he added.

In an exclusive conversation with India TV, DRDO chief G. Satheesh Reddy on Sunday said the anti-COVID drug, which has been approved for emergency use, will be rolled out by May 11. Explaining further, the DRDO chief said the drug will help neutralise most of the COVID-19 symptoms and will prevent the growth of the virus inside the body. Regarding the availability of the drug, Reddy said arrangements for proper distribution across all hospitals need to be done and a team is already working on the same. 
Speaking about the drug, the DRDO chief also said it would help improve the level of oxygen in the body. The drug is expected to help coronavirus patients within three days of consumption.
