Dennis Smith, a Renaissance man, was the author of “Report From Ground Zero" and many others, starting with "Report from Engine Co. 82." A reformed juvenile delinquent and a veteran, he became a firefighter — and stunned the literary establishment when they learned that he was the author of an erudite letter to the editor challenging an argument by Joyce Carol Oates.
