17,234 people have so far made the perilous journey across the 21-mile Dover Straits in 366 small boats this year. August alone has seen 2,501 people arrive in the UK in dinghies or other small craft.

Figures obtained by the Times, showed that around 30,000 people who submitted an asylum application stated they did not enter the country on small boats and instead travelled by other means.
