Abaco Big Bird Poultry Farm will have more chickens in the market by the end of this year, with 6,000 chicks expected to hatch today from its $45,000 new hatchery.
The high cost of eggs internationally is impacting Abaco Big Bird’s poultry product. According to the farm’s Manager of Operations Lance Pinder, Abaco Big Bird has to purchase broiler eggs in order to hatch and raise them for meat. The cost of eggs on supermarket shelves has more than doubled in recent weeks, which impacts the cost of chickens.
It could take Abaco Big Bird poultry farm another two years to get its production back to the levels it enjoyed before Hurricane Dorian Hit Abaco a little more than three years ago, the farm’s Manager of Operations Lance Pinder said yesterday, explaining that Abaco Big Bird once supplied five percent of locally consumed chicken.
