"ac360's" gary tuchman reports. >> reporter: this is not the first time south korea has had to deal with the disaster on the seas. the south korean navy ship exploded in 2010. 46 sailors were missing initi initially. the effort began immediately. the effort to raise the ship also began quickly when it was determined that was the only way to recover the bodies of the dead. 25 bodies were found a month later. the key to recovering the ship was a crane which actually lifted it from a water and placed it on a barge. and as a grim reminder that recovery can be dangerous...

More now on our breaking news out of south korea, the death toll in the ferry disaster rises to 181, 121 others still missing. and until the bodies of all the victims are recovered the ship does remain a grave site. but after the victims are returned to their families the ship will become a salvage operation and the investigators will try to answer the key question what caused that ferry to sink. now salvaging a ship that large will take time. it will be dangerous and expensive. but it has been done before.
