First-ever public school for transpersons opens today - Newspaper

MULTAN: Formal launch of the first-ever public sector school for transpersons will take place here on Wednesday (today).
The school is being established by the South Punjab Education Department at Government Girls Comprehensive Higher Secondary School, Gulgasht, under a pilot project ‘Transeducation’.
Talking to Dawn, Education Secretary Dr Ehtasham Anwar said in the first phase, the Accelerated Learning Programme (ALP) will be resorted to compensate for the lost schooling followed by formal schooling in phase II with the ultimate goal of mainstreaming of transpersons.
Mr Anwar said geographical mapping of Multan city was done and three pockets of habitation of transpersons - Al-Qureshi Housing Scheme, in and around Gulgasht Colony and Vehari Chowk - were identified and the school is close to one pocket. Initially 16 transgender persons got themselves enrolled for the ALP which would be divided in four groups - primary, elementary, secondary, and higher secondary. ....

ISLAMABAD: For the first time ever in Pakistan, the government of Punjab has initiated a ‘Transeducation’ pilot project for imparting education to the transgender community, and the project is expected to be launched on July 7.
The Education Department, south Punjab, Government of the Punjab, has decided to attend to this hitherto important yet ignored issue. Transeducation is being launched in Multan, whereby transgenders would be given formal education in evening classes at public sector schools by resorting to the Accelerated Learning Programme to compensate for the lost schooling in the first phase, and to formal schooling in the second. And gradually transgenders would be shifted to regular and age-appropriates classes/ schools. Efforts are being put in place as transgenders are one of the most marginalised segments of society in Pakistan. 3,000 children in Balochistan to benefit from collaboration with IRC

Islamabad: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) and the Government of Baluchistan’s Secondary Education Department signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for provision of education to 3,000 children in Balochistan, including Afghan refugees.
Both the parties will collaborate to increase student enrolment and retention in 40 schools in Balochistan. The International Rescue Committee (IRC), with the financial support of US Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration (BPRM), is implementing a three-year Enrollment, Retention, Mainstreaming and Protection (ERMP) project in Chaghi and Pishin districts of Balochistan.
This project aims to support access of children to non-formal education at their respective districts/locations. Zain ul Abedin, Country Director at the IRC, stated at the event, Government of Baluchistan’s support for the cause of the education is instrumental ....
