Weak demand puts a crack on India's leading listed tile makers' prospects

Kajaria Ceramics, the country's leading listed tile manufacturer, has seen its stock fall by 7 per cent over the past month amid concerns about rising input costs and sluggish domestic demand.

Other listed stocks also experienced weakness in September, although there was some recovery in October.

While strong exports are expected to help stabilise domestic market prices, the surge in gas prices over the past couple of months may have impacted margins in the second half of FY24.

After a weak FY23, tilemakers gain from higher demand

Stocks of the country's bigger tile and ceramic makers were major gainers over the past week.

The leaders in this space -- Kajaria Ceramics and Cera Sanitaryware -- were up 7 per cent each.

In the past three months, Kajaria Ceramics and Somany Ceramics were up 29-32 per cent, while Cera Sanitaryware gained 22 per cent.

Sugar stocks hit the sweet spot after govt okays Rs 3,500 cr export subsidy

The past 12 months have been good for investors in sugar stocks, as the sector has done better than the broader market. The combined market capitalisation (m-cap) of the top 15 sugar manufacturers such as EID Parry, Balrampur Chini, Dhampur Sugar, Shree Renuka Sugar, Bajaj Hindusthan Sugar, Triveni Engineering, and Dalmia Bharat Sugar among others has risen by 22.6 per cent year-on-year (YoY) since last December, against a 13 per cent rally in the benchmark BSE Sensex.
Sugar stocks have also outperformed the benchmark since the pandemic spread. The combined m-cap of the firms has more than doubled (up 115 per cent) since the end of March against a 58 per cent rise in the Sensex. It is worth noting, however, that sugar stocks fell more than the broader market in February-March. (See chart)
