Supports feral cat crackdown

Editor: I want to thank Wilkes-Barre City Administrator Charles McCormick for not backing down on the issue of feral cats in Kirby Park (“Advocates say W-B officials are endangering feral cats,” Feb. 22). The ordinance is clear. Perhaps those providing these shelters should be fined for breaking the law. Possibly if more fines were levied, this problem would be manageable. Trap/neuter/release may control population but not the nuisance created by those that still roam our neighborhoods.

(Cat advocate) Donna Fountain’s inference that this “gentleman is supposed to be for the animals” is grossly inaccurate. Mr. Olver is employed by the city with taxpayers’ dollars to enforce ordinances and protect us from potentially dangerous situations with feral cats. He is exposed to danger every day doing his job. I can’t thank him enough. ....

City officials say animal control officer Adam Olver was doing his job, enforcing a city ordinance that bans luring or feeding feral animals. They say their duty to protect the public from health hazards supersedes the well-being of feral animals.
Feral cat advocate Donna Fountain said last week that advocates have been placing cat shelters in the park for years, and they visit the park “consistently to make sure (the cats) are warm and fed. Most of them are fixed.” ....
