Editor: I want to thank Wilkes-Barre City Administrator Charles McCormick for not backing down on the issue of feral cats in Kirby Park (âAdvocates say W-B officials are endangering feral cats,â Feb. 22). The ordinance is clear. Perhaps those providing these shelters should be fined for breaking the law. Possibly if more fines were levied, this problem would be manageable. Trap/neuter/release may control population but not the nuisance created by those that still roam our neighborhoods. Second, I would like to commend Animal Control Officer Adam Olver for doing his job so efficiently. (Cat advocate) Donna Fountainâs inference that this âgentleman is supposed to be for the animalsâ is grossly inaccurate. Mr. Olver is employed by the city with taxpayersâ dollars to enforce ordinances and protect us from potentially dangerous situations with feral cats. He is exposed to danger every day doing his job. I canât thank him enough. ....
Some feral cat advocates are at odds with Wilkes-Barre City officials over cat shelters at Kirby Park. Advocates suspect the Wilkes-Barre animal control officer has been removing feral cat shelters they placed in the park to help the felines survive frigid February weather. City officials say animal control officer Adam Olver was doing his job, enforcing a city ordinance that bans luring or feeding feral animals. They say their duty to protect the public from health hazards supersedes the well-being of feral animals. Feral cat advocate Donna Fountain said last week that advocates have been placing cat shelters in the park for years, and they visit the park âconsistently to make sure (the cats) are warm and fed. Most of them are fixed.â ....
