Age eligibility for provincial benefit program supporting vulnerable youth being cut from 24 to 22 this year

The maximum age to qualify for the Support and Financial Assistance Agreements (SFAA) program is dropping from 24 to 22 and will impact about 450 people who will now age out of the program. More than 2,100 vulnerable young Albertans over 18 who were in government care currently receive benefits in the form of financial help for rent, groceries and health benefits.

The proposal to change the eligibility was first brought up by the UCP government in November 2019, but this was stalled by a successful injunction that was overturned by the Alberta Court of Appeal in January. The province then delayed implementation until further notice throughout the pandemic and confirmed Tuesday the eligibility changes are moving forward this year, but didn’t ....
