American and Nigerien defense officials say U.S. troops ordered out of Niger by its ruling junta will complete their withdrawal from the West African country by the middle of September
The US and Niger have agreed that American troops will leave the country "no later" than 15 September, they announced in a joint statement on Sunday.
The plan is to remove all lethal, hazardous or classified equipment before the last U.S. troops depart, but items that are determined to be too expensive to fly out could be left for the Nigerien military to use instead, the officials said.
Niger announced in March it was ending a military cooperation agreement with US, claiming the presence of US soldiers was now "illegal".
