the 2011 budget control act that president obama signed into law earlier this month preserved a at least one education priority, it funded pell grants through 2013. to pay for the $17 billion increase in pell grant spending, the budget control act did not end a needless subsidy for agriculture or oil industries. instead, it cut student loans for graduate and professional students for all of us still paying student loans for graduate and professional school, we know this is a big deal. cutting the subsidy means low and middle income students will begin to accrue interest on their loans once they are taken out. before this, interest did not accrue until after the student graduated.
