Digital Editor IFCO added features to its RPCs that will not only enhance the visibility of assets in the Walmart network, but also facilitate future innovations in product traceability.
In a move that further improves supply-chain efficiency and labor savings, Walmart has deepened its commitment to sustainability by selecting IFCO Systems as its exclusive provider of reusable plastic containers (RPCs) for fresh fruit and vegetables in the United States.
Under the seven-year agreement, IFCO and Walmart will build upon their longstanding collaboration, which launched in 1998 when the two companies joined forces to introduce reusable packaging in the United States. Walmart suppliers will deliver their produce to Walmart locations using IFCO RPCs. Each RPC will be retrieved after each use and cleaned, washed, sanitized and wrapped before being used again. IFCO RPCs are used up to 100 times before being reground into new RPCs.
Supplies of tomatoes right now are ample.
“Currently the market shows a big offer of volume considering the volumes that are coming from Mexico, United States and Canada. We estimate that there’s 20-25 percent more volume right now compared to 2019 in total from all three countries,” says Armando Herrera of Agros Produce LLC in Queretaro, México.
In Mexico, tomatoes are coming from Central and Bajio region including Guanajuato, Michoacán, Queretaro, San Luis Potosi, Estado de Mexico along with the Baja California. In the U.S., there’s production in California, Florida, Tennessee, Michigan and Ohio while in Canada, Leamington, ON is also in production.
RPCs can protect freshness and quality of tomatoes while lowering costs, food waste and environmental impact.
Tomatoes are one of the most challenging products in every retailer s fresh department. In addition to the complexities of growing and harvesting, the delicate fruits present handling challenges at store level, where selective shoppers demand ripeness, flavor and affordability.
Achieving that combination requires considerable effort further up the supply chain, so that when a shopper slices into their carefully chosen tomato, it s ripe and flavorful. To increase the odds of that happening, one of Mexico s top greenhouse growers and a leading U.S manufacturer of reusable plastic containers (RPCs) have formed an innovative partnership.
