Automation in row crop farming is difficult enough, but the problems get even more complex in speciality crops. Charlie Andersen and his team at Burro are helping farmers take the first step to bringing robots onto the farm.
Andersen… “You know, you think, if you re in the Midwest and you re a big tractor, you re high up, there s nothing above you. You can use high precision GPS to navigate around. If you re in a blueberry ranch or a table grape vineyard, you re under the canopy. You can t see the sky at all. There s oftentimes no cell phone reception. GPS is going to be super spotty. Winny… “Right now we re dealing with such large fields. We have fields that are up to 1200 acres in size. You can t keep track of every area in those fields with a pen and paper, you need geo referencing. You need to have all of that data to say, okay, this is where this weed patch is, or this is where, you know, we re seeing bug outbreaks. We need to spray this area specifically, and not the areas around it. Agriculture is just changing so rapidly and we need to start really targeting specific zones and how to effectively manage tho ....

It’s time for your Farm of the Future Report. I’m Tim Hammerich.
Some of the biggest needs for technology in agriculture may not be focused on farmers, but instead on their trusted advisors. Independent Crop Consultant Shannon Winny of GroWest Ag Ventures uses a tool called FarmQA to keep track of everything she’s seeing in the field and communicate that to her farmer customers.
Winny… “So I use it for soil sampling. I use it for scouting. I use it for it anytime I m out in the field. It s just my way of creating that paper trail and being able to document, you know, how many weeds I m seeing, what weed species they are, what insects I m seeing. Being able to share that with my growers so that they can see that in real time as well.” ....
