1 in 10 palliative care-related services provided at home

Date Time
1 in 10 palliative care-related services provided at home
The number of Medicare-subsidised palliative care services received by Australians in their own home almost doubled between 2015–16 and 2019–20, according to a new report from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW).
The report, Palliative care services in Australia, shows home visits for palliative care specialist services increased by an average of 18% annually over the 5-year period, with a total of 2,240 patients receiving home visits in 2019–20. However, most palliative care services continue to be received in a hospital or surgery, with these services increasing by 12% over the same 5-year period.
‘Providing palliative care-related services in the home can be important for people with a life-limiting illness and their families, enabling them to remain in or return to their preferred location,’ said AIHW spokesperson Ms. Sushma Mathur.

The report presents information on the provision of state and territory child protection services—such as referral to family support services, investigations of notified child abuse/neglect, care and protection orders, or out-of-home care placements—and the characteristics of children who received these services.

Fewer deaths among Australians with dementia during first 10 months of COVID-19 pandemic

Date Time
Fewer deaths among Australians with dementia during first 10 months of COVID-19 pandemic
The age-standardised death rate of Australians with dementia fell during the first 10 months of 2020, probably as a result of measures designed to prevent COVID-19 infections also limiting the spread of other infectious respiratory diseases, according to a new report from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW).
The report, Dementia deaths during the COVID-19 pandemic in Australia, uses provisional mortality data collected by the Australian Bureau of Statistics to examine deaths among people who had dementia recorded on their death certificates between January and October 2020.

The number of adoptions in Australia increased by 20% between 2015–16 and 2019–20 as more children were adopted by long-term carers or other adults already known to them, according to a new report released by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW).

New report looks at uptake of telehealth in antenatal care during COVID-19 lockdowns

Date Time
New report looks at uptake of telehealth in antenatal care during COVID-19 lockdowns
Almost 1 in 10 antenatal services for March to September 2020 were delivered via telehealth according to a new report by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW).
The report, Antenatal care during COVID-19, 2020, includes information on antenatal care services, both face-to-face and telehealth, claimed through the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS). The report covers a range of private antenatal services and it does not include information on antenatal care provided by public hospitals.
‘These antenatal specific telehealth services were introduced in March 2020, to enable Australians to stay at home where possible to reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission,’ said AIHW spokesperson Ms. Bernice Cropper.
