Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide’s leadership is being tested after senior bureaucrats from the Ministry of Communications were found to have been treated to a series of lavish meals with executives of satellite broadcasting company Tohokushinsha – which employs Suga’s eldest son, Seigo.
At least 11 senior ministry officials in Suga’s inner circle have been accused of potentially violating the National Public Service Ethics Law, which prohibits receiving favors from stakeholders. An internal investigation revealed that between July 2016 and December 2020, 11 executives from the ministry wined and dined 39 times with Tohokoshinsha executives, who paid up to $700 per head for meals of Wagyu beef and seafood. ....

There has been a spate of revelations of Japanese bureaucrats having been wined and dined by private stakeholders, resulting in senior officials from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications and the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries being punished for violating the National Public Service Ethics Code.
The scandals have left us appalled at the cozy ties forged between top bureaucrats at ministries and agencies and the very businesses they are meant to oversee and regulate.
The communications ministry meted out punishments to 11 senior officials lavishly entertained by the eldest son of Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga and other figures from broadcasting firm Tohokushinsha Film Corp. The farm ministry punished six senior officials on Thursday, including its top bureaucrat, for accepting expensive meals with a former head of a major egg producer who has been indicted for bribery.
The development could deal a further blow to Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga’s administration, which is already under fire over a similar scandal involving other elite bureaucrats who were wined and dined by Suga’s eldest son and other businesspeople. ....

The farm ministry has disciplined six bureaucrats who were wined and dined by an egg industry official involved in a separate bribery scandal that has ensnared a former agriculture minister.
Masaaki Edamoto, the top career bureaucrat in the ministry, was among the six who received pay cuts or warnings.
On two separate occasions, the bureaucrats had dinner at a Japanese restaurant in Tokyo that cost more than 20,000 yen ($190) each. Yoshiki Akita, the former head of Akita Foods Co., an egg producer based in Hiroshima Prefecture, picked up the tabs each time. ....
