NFL personnel people will never call need their driving force in the draft. They like their draft boards, the work going into them, and also that whole best-available athlete routine. However, their failures in the draft can shoot down this approach.  Most often, a team has to take the best available athlete based on their need position. On this date in 2017, ESPN’s Todd McShay played GM for every NFL team in a three-round mock. And I’m not sure which has me more confused: No quarterbacks going in Round 1 of this mock that was made about 20 days before the 2017 Draft … or that Mitchell Trubisky was still his QB1? In either case, re-visiting this mock draft should serve as a reminder of how much things can change between now and draft day. But also, it’s worth remembering that mock drafts are good for assessing team needs and the perception of strengths and weaknesses in a given glass.

Some carry a little more weight than others, though. In his latest mock this week, ESPN draft guru Todd McShay has the Bears making a realistic draft move and taking wide receiver Kadarius Toney from Florida. "Chicago is likely out of reach to trade up for a top-five QB, at least without completely leveraging the organization's future," McShay wrote, before describing the explosive Toney and adding "...he isn't polished."
