Over 30 counselors from all five Elgin Area School District U-46 high schools experienced their own career exploration day at two local businesses, Elgin Sweeper in Elgin and Hoffer Plastics in South Elgin, and the career and technical education labs at Elgin and South Elgin high schools on Friday, Jan. 28.
Maha Ayesh of Lombard is the first in her extended Palestinian American family to become a police officer, joining the Bartlett Police Department last October. She also is the suburbs' first Muslim female police officer who wears a hijab -- an Islamic head covering.
October is Manufacturing Month which celebrates and brings awareness of manufacturing to students, parents, people thinking about careers in manufacturing, the public, and educators. "Elgin has traditionally been a center for manufacturing making everything from street sweepers to ball bearings," says Carol Gieske, Elgin Area Chamber president. "The manufacturing sector in Elgin is one of the largest sectors of the economy and employs thousands of people in positions that require critical thinking skills, technical skills, attention to detail, and communication skills."
More than 2,500 eighth-graders and teachers in Elgin Area School District U-46 will participate on Thursday, Oct. 7, in a virtual version of "Explore 2021." The district's annual expo is designed to expose students to various careers and demonstrate the connection between academic curriculum and future careers.
The Elgin Kiwanis Club's annual Peanut Days returns on Friday, Sept. 24. Proceeds from the fundraiser support nonprofits that serve area children and families.
