If I asked you who you are, what would you say? Would you tell me your name, job title, location, religion, race, family status? Would that be enough for me to fully understand you—the essence of you that is different from your neighbor’s? …or would you tell me your story? Would you tell me about your childhood, about the events that shaped you, the people who influenced you, your fears and hopes? Everyone has a story. You do. Your country does. Your religious or spiritual tradition does. Even our scientific inquiries tell a story.

In the early 2000s, I ran ballot measure campaigns across the country to ensure that LGBTQ people couldn’t be fired or kicked out of their homes for being gay. In these campaigns, hundreds of us went door to door, telling neighbors and strangers our stories in hopes that they’d see us as human. These were hard conversations. Many of us had to confront our biggest fear: that we would be rejected because of who we knew ourselves to be.
