The strike coincides with the recent announcement in Chancellor Jeremy Hunt's Autumn Statement that the National Living Wage will rise from £10.42 to £11.44 per hour in April. Amazon contends that its pay already surpasses this level and the voluntary Real Living Wage, which stands at £12 per hour for non-London workers. The company emphasised the additional benefits it offers to its workforce.

The striking workers were chanting their demand for a pay rise to 15 pounds ($18.69) an hour. An Amazon UK spokesperson said minimum starting pay is between 11.80 pounds and 13 pounds an hour depending on location, and would increase to 12.30 to 13 pounds an hour from April 2024. Amazon said the strike would not cause disruption.

Amazon workers came out on strike at multiple locations across Europe on Friday as protests against the US e-commerce giant's working practices picked up pace on one of the busiest shopping days of the year.

The GMB trade union said the workers would walk out of the site in Coventry, central England from November 7-9, as well as Black Friday on November 24.
