Dumaboc) ZAMBOANGA CITY - Police authorities have launched an in-depth probe into a shooting incident that resulted in the death of two persons, including a Basilan town mayor, on Monday in this city. Another Basilan town mayor was wounded in the same incident that took place around 8:31 a.m. Monday at the seaside in Barangay Baliwasan, this city. Maj. Chester Natividad, city police Station 11 chief, identified the slain town official as Mayor Darussalam Lajid of Al-Barka municipality and Barad Nuruddin, cousin and driver of Akbar Municipal Mayor Alih Sali, who was wounded in the same incident. Lajid and Nuruddin were rushed to the hospital but were declared dead on arrival by the attending physician while Sali is now recuperating in the hospital. The perpetrators, who remain unidentified, sped off after the incident. Natividad said that all possible motives are being looked into by police investigators to solve the case. 33.5K vaccinated in Zambo City on Day 1 of nat'l vax days

FREE RIDE. Residents of Guisao, Zamboanga City, disembark from a village vehicle that provides free rides to encourage more people to get vaccinated on Tuesday (Nov. 30, 2021), the second day of the three-day national vaccination campaign. Some 33,587 residents were vaccinated on Monday (Nov. 29), which was lower than the city's 38,992 daily target. (Photo courtesy of Zamboanga City PIO) ZAMBOANGA CITY - Almost 34,000 residents got vaccinated against the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) on the first day of the nationwide vaccination drive here on Monday, although the figure is still a little short of the city's daily target. This prompted Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco-Salazar on Tuesday to reiterate her call for residents here to unite in the battle against Covid-19 and get themselves vaccinated. Salazar made the call as this city fell short of its target to vaccinate 38,992 individuals daily in the ongoing three-day National Vaccination Days. Data from the city health office showed that 33,587 were vaccinated Monday - the first day of the November 29 to December 1 National Vaccination Days - which is 5,405 short of the 38,992 target vaccination. "Let us unite to show our strength as a city in the fight against Covid-19," Salazar said. "Get vaccinated so that we will have a happy Christmas," she added. The city health office said 29,254 of the 33,587 total vaccinees received their first dose, while 4,333 got their second doses. A total of 52 vaccination centers here were opened during the first day of the mass immunization drive slated to culminate on Wednesday. The conduct of the "Bayanihan, Bakunahan" vaccination campaign is pursuant to Proclamation 1253 that President Rodrigo Duterte signed on November 24. The three-day activity caters to both pediatric and adult individuals. Meanwhile, some of the barangays in the city have provided a free ride to and from the vaccination centers Tuesday to encourage more people to get inoculated. (PNA) }

(Photo courtesy of SRPPF-BuCor) MANILA - The Department of Justice (DOJ) will recommend the inclusion of Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) in the three-day nationwide vaccination activities. Secretary Menardo Guevarra said the DOJ will request the National Task Force Against Covid-19 to include PDLs in Bureau of Corrections facilities during the November 29 to December 1 mass inoculation drive. "I understand that we have millions of doses available for this big event so this is the opportune time to consider the health of our PDL who are at risk of infection due to prison overcrowding," Guevarra told reporters via text message on Monday. A total of 17,295 PDL have received the Covid-19 vaccines as of data released last week, representing 35.52 percent of 48,689 inmates in BuCor-run facilities located in the National Capital Region (NCR), Mindoro Occidental, Zamboanga City, Palawan, and Davao del Norte. Of the total, 4,173 are fully inoculated as of November 9. In NCR, the Correctional Institution for Women in Mandaluyong City has 3,100 of 3,360 PDL fully vaccinated while 10,997 at the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa City, or 39 percent of 28,516 inmates, have likewise been inoculated although some have yet to complete their doses. Also fully vaccinated are 60 out of 7,230 inmates at the Davao Prison and Penal Farm in Davao del Norte and 1,003 of 2,304 at San Ramon Prison and Penal Farm in Talisayan, Zamboanga City. To date, 600 out of 2,387 at Sablayan Prison and Penal Farm in Mindoro Occidental and all 822 detained at Leyte Regional Prison in Abuyog have the first dose. The Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm in Puerto Princesa, Palawan has yet to vaccinate any of its 2,729 inmates, BuCor data showed. (PNA) }

As the evening grew darker and the 10 pm Zamboanga curfew drew close, people rushed to the monastery along Roseller T. Lim Boulevard to offer individual prayers. The visitors recalled how Aquino had finalized his decision to run for president during a retreat inside this monastery in 2009.

Zamboanga, dubbed the "City of Flowers," was true to its name that day. The flowers offered were mostly fresh chrysanthemums from the city's florists and cutflower farms. They were mostly yellow, the color associated with the Aquino family since the '80s.
