As per the newly notified rules, the ministry will enjoy the power to constitute a fact-checking unit, which will have sweeping powers to determine what is 'fake or false or misleading', with respect to 'any business of the Central government'.
The petition articulates several grounds to challenge it as arbitrary, unreasonable and aimed against well-settled Constitutional principles.
The petition stated that unless the court granted interim relief of staying such Rules, the same will cause "grave and irreparable harm, injury and prejudice" to the petitioner and other citizens of India.
