May 21 is Bike to Work Day
The annual Bike to Work Day (BTWD) in the D.C. region takes place Friday, May 21. Commuter Connections and the Washington Area Bicyclist Association host the event each year during May which is celebrated as Bike to Work Month.
Bikers may register at www.biketoworkmetrodc.org. All registrants will be entered in a regional bicycle raffle, and the first 16,000 to register will receive a free T-shirt to be picked up at one of the pit stops.
More than 100 pit stops will be set up all over the region – 20 in Montgomery County. Here is a map of pit stops.
The pandemic has made Bike to Work Day a different affair this year.
It’s still on for May 21, though, and Montgomery County, Maryland, will help make accommodations for would-be riders who are still telecommuting.
A larger number of “pit stops” will be open around the county to pedaling commuters, and 15,000 free 20th-anniversary commemorative T-shirts will be handed out at those pit stops to riders who preregister. The county is encouraging telecommuters to “fake commute” by riding to a pit stop and picking up their shirt, before returning home and logging on to work.
