Anayatin (center) of the Bangsamoro Transition Authority - Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) poses with orphans in Cotabato City on Wednesday (Jan. 19, 2022) who are regular recipients of her humanitarian aid like food packs. This month alone, a total of 3,984 individuals have benefited from the BARMM lawmaker's humanitarian mission carried out amid the prevailing pandemic. (Photo courtesy of Ayanatin's office) COTABATO CITY - Amid threats posed by the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19), an orphaned lawmaker of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) has continued her humanitarian works for the indigents in the region, including children at orphanages. Bangsamoro Transition Authority (BTA) Parliament Member Susana S. Anayatin said being an orphan herself, she has her heart close to the children who lost their parents at a young age. She drew her advocacy from a quote from Mother Theresa of Calcutta on feeding the needy. "I am inspired by this quote from Mother Teresa of Calcutta who says: If you cannot feed many, feed one," Anayatin said in a statement Thursday as she and her staff resumed her feeding program and humanitarian mission to the people. Anayatin said her latest mission forms part of the celebration of BARMM's 3rd foundation anniversary on January 21. Between January 10 and 12, a total of 143 individuals have benefitted from a humanitarian mission in Kualabaru, Bongao, Tawi-Tawi facilitated by Oblate priest Fr. Rito Daquipil, the humanitarian partner of Anayatin in the area. In Barangay Matatal, Maimbung, Sulu, more than 100 senior citizens have received food assistance from Anayatin's office through its partner, the Notre Dame of Jolo College Community Extension Service, headed by school president Fr. Eduardo Santoyo. Four orphanages, one in Maguindanao and three in Cotabato City, were also recipients of the food assistance. "The orphans have been my choice and among the sector that I love to serve -- myself being an orphan. Our father was shot to death in our house in 1971 during the armed conflict involving the 'Ilaga' (a militia group) and 'Black Shirts' (Moro armed group) in Maguindanao," Anayatin, representing settler communities in BARMM, recalled. Also on the list of beneficiaries are early settler communities, the Indigenous Peoples, fish vendors, tricycle drivers, and other indigent families who were socially and economically affected by the Covid-19 economic crisis. The recipients are residents of six villages of Datu Odin Sinsuat, three sub-villages in Datu Blah Sinsuat, Cotabato City, North and South Upi, Parang, Sultan Kudarat, and Datu Piang. For the mission, the office of Anayatin has partnered with parish priests, pastors, chapel leaders, barangay chairpersons in the communities for smooth distribution of assistance. On Wednesday, a total of 339 individuals have benefitted from the feeding program in two orphanages, the Catholic church-run Bahay Maria, the home for the aged and the single mothers, and the Notre Dame University Center for Catechesis. Also on the list of recipients are homeless women and out-of-school youth. Anayatin also extended aid regularly to patients at the Cotabato Regional and Medical Center undergoing dialysis and chemotherapy. She said this is being done regularly so the needy people will feel that the BARMM government cares for them and help them move forward amid the pandemic. For this month, a total of 3,984 individuals have so far benefitted from her humanitarian mission. The BARMM covers the cities of Cotabato, Lamitan and Marawi; the provinces of Maguindanao, Lanao del Sur, Sulu, Basilan, and Tawi-Tawi; and the 63 villages in six towns of North Cotabato, (PNA) }

BARMM works double time to achieve population protection

The BARMM health official has vowed to work double-time to achieve population protection in the region. (Photo courtesy of MOH-BARMM) COTABATO CITY - Healthcare providers in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) are now working double-time in their vaccination campaign in the region's component areas to achieve their desired population protection. Dr. Bashary Latiph, BARMM health minister, said Monday that the recently conducted "Bayanihan, Bakunahan" in the BARMM was considered successful although the region failed to reach the target clients of 940,000. To date, the region has inoculated more than 680,000 out of its 2.9 million eligible target population. Latiph said BARMM "bakunadors" (vaccinators) will continue the campaign with added dynamism as it increased the number of vaccination hubs to 570. "We are intensifying our vaccination, there are still people out there who have not availed of the immunization, we will continue to reach out to them," Latiph said. "Our provincial, municipal, and barangay healthcare providers are now out there to continue our job," he added. MOH-BARMM has tallied a total of 195,440 vaccine doses administered in the region during the massive vaccination activity from Nov. 29 to Dec. 1. Data released by MOH showed that 162,352 jabs were entered into the vaccine operations reporting system, while 33,088 were manually recorded. As healthcare providers and "bakunadors" resumed their enormous task of reaching out to the residents in geographically difficult-to-reach areas, Latiph lauded the various BARMM government agencies that accompanied MOH during the three-day activity. "Kudos also goes to men in uniforms, non-government organizations, civil society organizations, and volunteers for the support they have shown during the Bayanihan, Bakunahan," he said. The BARMM covers the cities of Cotabato, Lamitan and Marawi; the provinces of Maguindanao, Lanao del Sur, Sulu, Basilan, and Tawi-Tawi; and the 63 villages in six towns of North Cotabato. (PNA) }

Creation of Bangsamoro Nutrition Council pushed

The BARMM administration building in Cotabato City (Photo courtesy of Bangsamoro Information Office - BARMM) COTABATO CITY - A group of lawmakers in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) has pushed for the creation of the Bangsamoro Nutrition Council (BNC) to address the high prevalence of malnutrition in the region. Bangsamoro Transition Authority (BTA) - BARMM Member of Parliament (MP) Amilbahar Mawallil, the principal author of the proposal, has filed Parliament Bill 130, which seeks to create the BNC. Under the proposed measure, it will be attached to the Ministry of Health - BARMM and serve as the primary agency for nutrition concerns during natural and man-made calamities. "It is vital therefore to institutionalize mechanisms, such as preventive health care and proper nutrition, to address these problems," Mawallil said in a statement Wednesday. Citing the findings of the 8th National Nutrition Survey, Mawallil said the region has the second-highest undernutrition prevalence for stunting at 39 percent; the second-highest chronic energy deficiency rate at 13.2 percent; the third-highest prevalence of anemia among the elderly at 26.6 percent; and the fifth-highest prevalence of adult current smokers at 28 percent. Co-authors of the regional bill are MPs Laisa Alamia, Rasol Mitmug Jr., Suharto Ambolodto, Baintan Ampatuan, Don Mustapha Loong, Abraham Burahan, and Sittie Shahara Mastura. "Food security is vital in realizing and sustaining a healthy nutritional wellbeing," the authors of the bill said in an explanatory note. Through the proposed nutrition council, the BARMM government will establish a mechanism for facilitating collaboration among agencies, sectors, and stakeholders. The BARMM has developed its Regional Action Plan for 2020-2022 as a strategic and comprehensive plan to respond to the Bangsamoro region's nutritional problems. There are still gaps that must be addressed if the region intended to meet not just national but global nutrition standards. "Our ongoing experience with the coronavirus disease is a stark reminder that as the pandemic rages on, it will only exacerbate existing inequalities in the country and the Bangsamoro region," the authors said in the note. The bill proposes that the council consist of 14 members representing various ministries and sectors, including non-Moro indigenous people, women, the youth, and settler communities. Its powers and functions include promoting food security and formulating regional food and health policies in the region. The BARMM covers the cities of Cotabato, Lamitan and Marawi; the provinces of Maguindanao, Lanao del Sur, Sulu, Basilan and Tawi-Tawi; and the 63 villages in six towns of North Cotabato province.
