MILTON – At its opening session Monday night, town meeting voters rejected a request to take $351,000 from a town "rainy day" account for the school department. After more than two hours of debate, 53 percent of town meeting members voted against an amendment to withdraw the money from the town's stabilization fund. The money was to pay for six jobs that school officials said are top priorities. School committee member Elaine Craghead said the five teachers and one guidance counselor would help meet needs created by enrollment growth and the coronavirus pandemic. The positions are not included in the $54.18 million 2021-22 school budget recommended by the warrant committee, a 3.3 percent increase over present spending. Three of the jobs had been funded by the December special town meeting. The others are new.
