Newton Teachers Strike Update: 'Incredibly Difficult On Everyone' - Newton, MA - The Newton Teachers Association: "As resolute as ever to secure the contract our students and educators need and deserve."
A judge reduced fines against the Newton Teachers Association for its strike to $50,000 per school day until the union reaches a contract.
The teachers' union says its members will be picketing on Monday, which means classes will likely be canceled for a seventh school day.
Striking Newton educators and the School Committee made public some of their proposals for a new contract Sunday afternoon in apparent last-ditch efforts to reopen the city’s schools in time for Monday morning.
Newton’s is the longest educator strike thus far in a statewide wave that began in Malden and Haverhill in the fall of 2022. The sense of delay has bred acrimony on both sides of the contract dispute. But a judge is pushing for a resolution this weekend.
