Tests, the gold standard, it will find remnants of virus. you could still be positive long after you are no longer contagious. the rapid antigen tests people often take at home, those are the ones more likely to answer the questions people are asking. am i still contagious? that s the answer that a lot of people are wanting. they feel fine, but they want to know if they re still contagious in the cdc should be promoting those types of tests. they talked about 500 million of these tests going out. we need them, more than that ultimately, but that would be a start. what is the latest that you know? what itself the best understanding right now about how good these tests are when you are talking about pcrs and antigen tests, how good they are at detecting the omicron variant? yes, this is a fundamental point. i think, first of all, omicron may be a little different. so the sensitivity of these tests may go down a bit. but regardless, you know, is it possible someone could test ....

An interested party in new york city, that the school system there has some cache of rapid tests, they re using them in a certain way. do all school systems have that? or is there fairly uniform distribution of this? how are the schools getting access to tests? no. i mean, the production and availability of the tests is increasing very rapidly right now, so that s a good-news story. but there s still a huge shortage of these tests being where they need to be in schools, for kids, for families, for teachers. the tests are not very widespread. in many cities it s still really, really hard for schools to get them. a lot of schools that shuttered this week told me today that they did so because they re awaiting a shipment of these antigen rapid tests from their states. and so whether they made the ....

Before testing positive or two days before symptoms begin. then about three or four-days after symptoms begin. but fur asymptomatic and still test positive on a rapid antigen test, you can still spread to other people. now if you have no symptoms and you test positive on a pcr, the most accurate test, that is understandable. we expect a pcr test to remain positive for up to 90 days but not a rapid antigen. that is the key. that is the one that needs to be negative. carley: you know i think a lot of people watching this program right now they think you know, if omicron is similar to a cold then why aren t we treating it like a cold? why are we testing everybody and why are we making people quarantine even for five days? can you add some perspective to that thought process? and that may change as we learn more about this virus but ....

It has been exemplary, you know, and i think that is the lesson to the world who are a few weeks behind south africa in this course with 0micron. you can get there, but you have to do what it takes and, unfortunately, we re not seeing that everywhere. do you think it might be slightly too soon to start easing restrictions as south africa is doing with curfews? 0h, absolutely not, not here in the us. we are seeing sky high numbers. we have broken records for case positivity rates in case counts in st louis. 0ur hospitals are at capacity. we don t have healthcare workers available to fully staff them because of those numbers. but more shocking to me as a public health expert, is we don t have the resources we need to really do what we need to do to get this under control. testing is limited. antigen tests are not available as they are in the uk and other places. new cdc guidelines came out this week ....

Cases reported. the number of infections maybe higher than reported as fewer people tested over the christmas holiday. hospitalization rates are also rising from omicron. maryland and washington, d.c. reported a record number of hospitalizations, more than 2,000. the cdc is defending new recommendations that cut the isolation time for asymptomatic people who tested positive from ten days to five. i asked the director of the cdc, dr. wallensky about the decision not recommending a negative test before returning to normal activity? in those recommendations we do not recommend a test for several reasons. we know the pcr test can stay positive for 12 weeks. if you are waiting for a negative pcr, you would be isolating for months. in terms of the antigen, we ....
