New Zealand teachers who want to use the titles matua and whaea in the classroom instead of Mr and Miss have been given the green light to do so by the Ministry of Education.

Teachers say they were not allowed to be addressed as 'whaea' or 'matua' at Hawke's Bay school

Hutana said the terms were important to her as they had been used throughout her whakapapa and for her whānau who had been teachers.
“It’s all about revitalisation for me and that’s only because it’s a way of healing, and it’s a way of honouring our tipuna, our ancestors and all the mamae (hurt) they've been through," she told
Te Karere.
Mitchell said to be told he wasn’t allowed to be called Matua was “cutting those ties, which hurt the most”.
The teachers told TVNZ the school’s principal said the names were unprofessional.
