Members of the Nigeria Labour Congress in Anambra State are protesting the economic hardship in the country.

The scarcity of cash in banks has reportedly adversely affected economic activities in Southeast Nigeria as residents struggle to buy foodstuffs and other items for the Yuletide. Visits to commercial banks in Enugu, Ebonyi, Imo, Abia and Anambra states show that banks have run out of cash in their Automated Teller Machines (ATMs). In Enugu State, for instance, the ATMs at the First Bank branches in Okpara Avenue, Ogui Road, Presidential Road and Agbani Road were out of cash, leaving many customers stranded.

Residents and motorists in Anambra State were on Wednesday thrown into lamentation following about 100 percent unprecedented transport fare hikes orchestrated by sudden fuel scarcity across the state as fuel marketers shut down almost all the filling stations in the state. With over 80 percent filling stations in the state, especially in major cities including the state capital, Awka, a few stations that were open for business sold fuel at as high N550 per litre while black marketers sold as high as N1200 per litre.

As the scarcity of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) otherwise known as petrol, and the new Naira notes across the country bites hard, and disrupts economic and social activities, some petrol stations are yet making it more complicated for Nigerians. SaharaReporters’ investigation uncovered how some petrol stations, especially the independent petrol marketers, are sabotaging the cashless policy as they now demand cash to buy fuel in their stations, apart from hoarding the products.

Residents of Enugu and Awka cities on Friday shunned the sit-at-home order given by the self-proclaimed Nnamdi Kanu's disciple, Simon Ekpa. Enugu and Awka are the capital cities of Enugu and Anambra states in Southeast Nigeria respectively. SaharaReporters observed that residents of the cities went about their normal business despite the directive issued by Ekpa. Sources told SaharaReporters that residents of other cities, towns and villages in the states were also going about their normal business.
