At least 45 people were killed and hundreds of others injured as a devastating fire swept through a container facility in Chattogram district, about 242 km southeast of the capital Dhaka.
Flouting the guidelines, hazardous chemicals were kept close to containers stuffed with garment items that fed the blaze at the BM Container Depot in Chattogram's Sitakunda on Saturday, leaving at least 49 dead and over 200 wounded.
The industrial disaster is not an isolated incident but another predictable example of how big business, with government authorities turning a blind eye, violates rudimentary safety standards, sacrificing workers’ lives to maximise profits.
Saturday's fire reportedly caused a massive blast which led to several subsequent container blasts that firefighters were still trying to douse well into Sunday. The cause of the fire is, as yet, unknown.
