MOSCOW - The Council of the World Chess Federation (FIDE) has approved a previously submitted application from the Chess Federation of Russia (CFR) asking to join the Asian Chess Federation (ACF), the FIDE press office announced on Wednesday. "The FIDE Council reviewed yesterday (Feb. 21) the report prepared by the Constitutional Commission on the request made by the Chess Federation of Russia (CFR) to join the Asian Chess Federation (ACF)," the statement reads. The world's chess governing body said the Asian Chess Federation is expected to decide on this request at its General Assembly, which will take place in Abu Dhabi on Feb. 28. "Its acceptance would automatically imply that the Chess Federation of Russia withdraws its membership to the European Chess Union, since a federation cannot belong to two continents at the same time," it added. The Russian Chess Federation has advised the European Chess Union that they have applied for membership of the Asian Chess Federation, and that they intend to withdraw from the ECU as soon as they have been admitted. The ECU acknowledges that the invasion and war in Ukraine, has obliged the IOC and international sports federations to take difficult decisions and firm positions, and that the intention of sanctions is not to punish individual athletes, especially those players who have not acted against the peace mission of sports.
