CO2 Science

Strawberry (
Fragaria ananassa) is a popular fruit known for its rich nutrition and sweet taste. In a previous study Zhao
et al. (2018) reported that elevated CO
2 improved strawberry fruit growth, yield and quality. Now, in a follow up paper, Li
et al. (2020) explored the physiological and molecular mechanisms driving such changes. In doing so they examined the growth rate and photosynthetic indices in strawberry leaves under ambient and elevated CO
2, while also performing transcriptome profiling by RNA sequencing on leaves from the two CO
2 treatments in an effort to elucidate gene regulation of photosynthesis in a CO
2-enriched environment.
The work was conducted in the Chinese Solar Greenhouse of Shanxi Agricultural University (China). Plants were grown under normal greenhouse production methods at CO ....

An important issue now is the publication of the presentations from the ICMGP 2019 in peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Ashu Dastoor agreed to organise a special issue of the Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics Journal (ACP) and act as a Guest Editor for this issue. The ACP is a prestigious and open access peer-reviewed journal.
If you are interested to publish your presentation in ACP, please, contact Dr. Dastoor.
This will be an interactive open-access European Geosciences Union(EGU) Inter-Journal Special Issue: Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics (ACP) and Atmospheric Measurement Techniques (AMT).
Inter-journal Special Issue (ACP/AMT): Research results from the 14th  International Conference on Mercury as a Global Pollutant (ICMGP 2019), MercOx project and iGOSP and iCUPE projects of ERA-PLANET in support of Minamata Convention on Mercury ....

2 and climate on intrinsic water-use efficiency in South Asian tropical moist forest trees.
Tree Physiology
40: 904-916.
Numerous scientific studies have been conducted in both laboratory and field environments to examine the impact of rising atmospheric CO
2 on plant water use efficiency (WUE). In nearly all instances those studies reveal rising CO
2 improves plant WUE, typically by reducing plant stomatal apertures, which reduces water lost to the air via transpiration. Consequently, at higher levels of CO
2, plants tend to need less water to produce the same (or more) amount of tissue, which portends great benefits for the future of agricultural production, especially in arid and irrigated regions. ....

Ecology and Evolution, DOI: 10.1002/ece3.6552.
The overwhelming majority of ocean acidification studies conducted to date involve assessing potential impacts on a given species in isolation. In the words of Doo
et al. (2000), this is unfortunate and problematic because such experiments do not capture ecologically relevant scenarios where the potential for multi-organism physiological interactions is assessed. Such relevant scenarios include the operation of
compensatory mechanisms whereby interactions between multiple organisms allow for physiological modification to buffer against stress and maintain ecological equilibria. For example, Doo ....

Blue-Green Algae Could Help Keep Humans Alive on Mars, Experiment Suggests

16 FEBRUARY 2021
Mars may not have a lot going on at the moment, life-wise, but the dusty red planet may not be as inhospitable as it seems.
New experiments have shown that cyanobacteria (aka blue-green algae) can successfully grow in Martian atmospheric conditions.

A few more ingredients are required, of course, but it s a significant step towards cyanobacteria-based life support systems for human habitats when we finally make our way over there.
Here we show that cyanobacteria can use gases available in the Martian atmosphere, at a low total pressure, as their source of carbon and nitrogen,  said astrobiologist Cyprien Verseux of the University of Bremen in Germany. ....
