Hot race: With the 5G spectrum being a shared commodity, it seems likely that competition will intensify in the telecommunications industry.

Telcos to gain from 5G fast-track

Digital econ
PETALING JAYA: The government’s decision to fast-track 5G services in Malaysia by year-end, underscores the urgent shift towards digital technologies that has been accelerated by the global Covid-19 pandemic.
Analysts said the move would help reap numerous benefits for the economy, especially for the local telecommunications sector.
“The 5G rollout, which will be deployed by a special purpose vehicle (SPV) that is wholly-owned by the government, will reduce the investment burden on telecommunications companies or telcos, ” said an analyst.
“This means that the local telcos can breathe easy, yet still stay committed to the Jendela digital infrastructure plan, which aims to increase Malaysia’s 4G coverage from 91.6% to 96.9% by 2022.” ....

SMEs geared towards a cashless society

THE rise of contactless payments has the media talking about the fast-encroaching cashless society. Especially since the Covid-19 outbreak, contactless payment has become part of the new normal.
We see bright days ahead with fewer cash-based crimes, easy budgeting – transactions are just a few taps away on our phones – and shorter queues at the supermarket.
That’s right, no more coin counting at the checkout counter.
With increased confidence in online transactions, the role of mobile has propelled the cause even further and Malaysia is paving its way towards a cashless society.
We see it in government initiatives such as ePenjana and eTunai Rakyat, which encourage locals to normalise ewallets as the primary payment solution at counters. ....
