The court said "past wrongs cannot be the basis for disturbing the peace in present and future".
The mediation will continue till July 31 and the panel will submit its report on August 1 on talks with various groups for a solution.
Senior advocate Rajeev Dhavan, appearing for the legal heirs of original litigant M Siddiq, had said that outlining of the dispute is not necessary and the court can order mediation by an mediator, when parties are unable to settle it.
The Supreme Court on Tuesday said that it will pass an order on March 5 on whether the case may be sent for court-monitored mediation to save time.
