管虎坦言，这一手法相当于浓缩了8部电影，拍摄和剪辑起来非常有难度，但这种复杂的叙事方式让管虎自己很着迷。李大钊先生1927年去世，林林总总的线索，要想在两个小时里展现出来，特别难完成，“我们就是想通过不同人眼中的他，演绎出他不同的侧面，组合成完整的、栩栩如生的李大钊先生。”
管虎知道这种叙事方式带有一点实验性，对观众来说也有一点点挑战，“这一点点实验性，对观众来说应该是新鲜的，也是能接受的。”在创作上，管虎从来不固步自封，“跟我自己比的话，我觉得自己在不断尝试，没有停留。”
张颂文做到了神形兼具
