For over a century, Indigenous children in Canada were forced to attend schools aimed at stripping away their culture and language, and many also suffered physical and sexual abuse at these institutions.
Survivors of residential day schools who attended during the day but went home at night can apply for $10,000 in compensation. The settlement also applies to the estate and descendants of day scholars who died on or after May 30, 2005. There are five N.W.T. residential day schools listed in the settlement.
