Ames Tribune An Iowa State project that brings electricity to disaster areas was put to use after a derecho tore through Iowa and left many without power for days or even weeks. Iowa State researchers and Sioux City's SunCrate Energy have spent the past two years collaborating on a microgrid, decentralized energy sources that can be autonomous, to show its effectiveness during disasters. The researchers' work, a used shipping crate with a solar panel on top, can be seen neighboring Bandshell Park in Ames.
