BEFI seeks stress-free work environment

‘Employees facing tremendous pressure due to non-banking work’
Bank Employees Federation of India (BEFI) has demanded that bank managements put an end to non-banking business and focus on banking for the welfare of banks and their employees.
Speaking in the backdrop of the death of a woman officer, BEFI State general secretary S.S. Anil said employees were working under tremendous pressure owing to non-banking work. He blamed the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for giving silent permission to banks to undertake such work.
BEFI joint secretary N. Meena said the officer who allegedly took the extreme step was not the first to do so due to work pressure. She added that several officials had opted for voluntary retirement owing to intolerable work demands.

One million Indian bank employees join two-day national strike against privatisation
About one million public sector bank workers joined a two-day national strike on Monday and Tuesday against the plans by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government for mergers and privatisations of state banks. Striking workers held protests in several cities across India.
The two-day action is part of a growing wave of class and other social struggles in India and internationally. Tomorrow, workers in public sector insurance companies will join a strike against privatisation. Tens of thousands of farmers are in continuous protests against the government’s pro-agribusiness farm laws, camping at various sites on the outskirts of Delhi since November 26.

Not all banks will be privatised: FM Nirmala Sitharaman amid employees' nationwide strike

The strike comes in the wake of Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman's announement in the Union Budget 2021-22 of privatisation of two public sector banks (apart from IDBI Bank) as part of the government’s disinvestment drive to generate Rs 1.75 lakh crore. The IDBI Bank is already privatised by the government by selling its majority stake to the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) in 2019 and merged 14 public sector banks in the last four years.
State Bank of India explaining the consequences of the strike had said, "We inform that, we have been advised by lndian Banks Association lBA that United Forum of Bank Unions UFBU which comprises 9 major Unions, viz.
