Israeli police clash with Palestinian crowd in Jerusalem

Apr 18, 2021 01:57 pm
JERUSALEM (AP) — Israeli police clashed with hundreds of Palestinian protesters outside Jerusalem’s Old City on Sunday, firing stun grenades and a water cannon to disperse the crowd, Israeli media said.
Similar clashes have occurred nightly since the Muslim holy month of Ramadan began last week. Palestinians say they typically gather on the stairs outside the Old City’s Damascus Gate each evening during Ramadan but that this year Israeli police put up barriers to keep away the crowds.
The move has angered Muslims who like to meet at the plaza to pass the Ramadan nights after the daily dawn-to-dusk fast ends. Police accuse the crowds of disorderly conduct and throwing stones at security forces.

Hamid Ahmadi still can feel the cold of the February night when Serbian police left him and two dozen other refugees in a forest. Groups of refugees and economic migrants trying to reach Western Europe regularly give accounts of police forcibly pushing them back across borders in the Balkans. Pushbacks are illegal, and authorities routinely deny that their agencies carry out such collective expulsions, which are difficult to prove and mostly go unpunished. (AP Photo/Darko Vojinovic)

Undumbing Down "Progressive Realism"

Response to "What is Progressive Realism" ["But the article was essentially about describing the differences between schools of thought while obviously giving evidence the author thought supported a different school than has predominated and was making a case for trying something different"]
Robert Wright in the 2nd paragraph makes "realist" a synonym for Kissinger's cynical "realpolitik", thus loading any "realist" with the baggage of Kissinger's policies in Vietnam, turning a blind eye to disaster in Indonesia, et al. A rather tawdry piece of smear and false equivalency. (To be clear, the level of human carnage in SE Asia and the expulsion of Commusts from Indonesia was huge - incomparable to the tolls we've seen in Mideast conflicts the last 20 years.)

Marc A. Thiessen: Biden blunders in leaving Afghanistan

WASHINGTON
In his speech Wednesday announcing the United States’ retreat from Afghanistan, President Joe Biden noted that the 9/11 attacks “sparked an American promise that we would ‘never forget.’” Well, apparently Biden has forgotten the epic disaster he unleashed in 2011 when he was in charge of the withdrawal of all U.S. forces from Iraq.
That catastrophic decision created a vacuum that allowed the Islamic State — which at the time, CIA Director John Brennan explained in 2015, had just “700-or-so adherents left” — to regroup, reconstitute itself and build a caliphate the size of Britain. They unleashed a frenzy of terror — summary executions, women and children buried alive, people crucified, American journalists beheaded and the enslavement and mass rape of Yazidi women. The rampage of violence was not contained to Iraq and Syria. The Islamic State spread its murderous tentacles across the globe, carrying out 143 attacks in 29 countries that killed more than 2,000 people and injured many thousands more. And we were forced to send American troops back to deal with the resurgent terrorist threat.

TEHRAN, Iran — A high-ranking general key to Iran's security apparatus has died, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced on Sunday.
Brig. Gen. Mohammad Hosseinzadeh Hejazi, who died at 65, served as deputy commander of the Quds, or Jerusalem, force of Iran's paramilitary Revolutionary Guard. The unit is an elite and influential group that oversees foreign operations, and Hejazi helped lead its expeditionary forces and frequently shuttled between Iraq, Lebanon and Syria.
Born in 1956 in the city of Isfahan, Hejazi joined the Guard after the 1979 Islamic Revolution and came to lead the paramilitary Basij volunteer corps for a decade — a tenure that saw the force transform into a pillar of the country's security and political apparatus.

Saudis bust huge drug haul of 5m amphetamine pills

Abu Dhabi: An attempt to smuggle more than five million amphetamine tablets hidden inside packages of oranges has been thwarted, said spokesperson for the Saudi General Directorate of Narcotics Control (GDNC), Captain Mohammed bin Khaled Al Najidi.
Four smugglers, including two Saudi citizens, a resident of an unidentified nationality and a Syrian, were arrested in connection with the massive haul of 5.2 million pills of the highly addictive drug that stimulates the central nervous system, Al Najidi said.
The suspects were remanded in custody pending a move to Public Prosecution for further interrogation and trial, police said.
Al Najidi confirmed the GDNC’s determination to follow-up on all drug-related criminal activities, as well as to track down people involved in the illegal trade.

The culinary unity within Ramadan

The culinary unity within Ramadan
Daily News (via HT Media Ltd.)
Globally, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar heralds the period of religious fasting. It is a time of deep spiritual reflection, renunciation and devotion. The word Ramadan is derived from the Arabic word ramadi – meaning dryness. Thousands of adults and youth faithfully adhere to the sacred fast whilst working or attending university. Fasting is observed from sunrise to sunset. The observance is one of the five pillars of Islam. Iftar is the symbolic meal that breaks the day’s fast. In order to appreciate the cultural and culinary heritage of Iftar we must understand the cultural background from where the religion of Islam was propagated. In keeping with the teachings of the Prophet Mohammed, the fast is broken by eating three dates. This is followed by drinking a rice-based porridge or faluda (chilled milk infused with rose essence).

Does a Third Lebanon-Israel War Lie Ahead?

Posted on
By: Steve Emerson | CCNS
Despite a collapsing Lebanese economy and considerable political turmoil, Hezbollah continues to threaten Israel. These threats must be taken seriously, given the Iranian-backed proxy army’s Hezbollah incredible stockpile of long-range, medium-range, and short-range missiles that can reach every square inch of Israel.
I spoke last Friday with the Middle East Forum about the worst-case scenarios for a conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. The possibilities include a surprise attack by Hezbollah, an Israeli pre-emptive strike, an unplanned escalation, and a multi-front war against Israel.
The situation is a powder keg, and one false move can set any of these scenarios in motion. Israelis understood the surprise attack possibility in 2019 when they discovered several well-built tunnels that started more than a half-mile inside of Lebanon but crossed into Israel. Hezbollah could have used them to attack northern Israeli communities, trying to kill as well as take many Israeli civilians hostage. This kind of terrorist attack would have sparked a full-blown war.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Joe Biden plans to lift his predecessor's historically low cap on refugees by next month, after initially moving only to expand the eligibility criteria for resettlements and getting swift blowback from allies in return.
In an emergency determination signed Friday, Biden stated the admission of up to 15,000 refugees set by President Donald Trump this year "remains justified by humanitarian concerns and is otherwise in the national interest." But if the cap is reached before the end of the current budget year and the emergency refugee situation persists, then a presidential determination may be issued to raise the ceiling.

Vice-foreign minister says competition must not be 'vicious, zero-sum game'
Beijing and Washington should "avoid creating confrontation" as they roll out efforts at a working level to translate into reality the consensus reached at the recent high-level strategic dialogue in Anchorage, Alaska, a senior diplomat said.
China and the United States are cooperating on some specific issues, as they "have provided favorable COVID-19 vaccination arrangements for each other's diplomats", Vice-Foreign Minister Le Yucheng said in a recent interview with the Associated Press.
He noted that John Kerry, climate envoy for US President Joe Biden, visited China for discussions on cooperation on climate change, adding that "all these are positive trends that should be encouraged".

Turkey-Algeria relations have become tense following meetings between Turkish officials and leaders of the Rachad Movement, which Algerian authorities designate as an extremist group, threatening national security, pan-Arab newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat said on Friday.
The two parties held two meetings in Turkey in order to discuss backing the movement to empower in Algeria, the news website said, citing the sources who spoke to Algerian newspaper el-Khabar.
“Turkey is trying to remotely intervene in the internal affairs of Algeria and destabilise the nation,” the sources said, adding that Turkey “might have decided to add Algeria to its list as a new target in North Africa and wants to mobilise the sleeper cells of this organisation.”

Syria to hold presidential election on May 26 - Newspaper

DAMASCUS: Syria will hold a presidential election on May 26 that is expected to keep Bashar al-Assad in power in the country devastated by a decade of civil war.
It will be the second vote since the conflict erupted in March 2011, killing at least 388,000 people since and displacing half the population, with no political solution in sight.
Western powers last month warned against a poll that would not be “fair or free”, and opposition figure Nasr Hariri denounced the forthcoming election as a “farce”.
The election, announced on Sunday by parliament speaker Hamouda Sabbagh, comes as Syria is also mired in a deep economic crisis, worsened by sanctions, the pandemic and financial turmoil in Lebanon.

Pandaw Cruises is one of the few travel organisations to denounce the military coup and support the people of Myanmar through medical donations. So far, it has raised more than USD120,000 for Pandaw clinic medical teams. Relief efforts have been extended to a broader area beyond the seven villages where they usually run day clinics to aid those suffering gunshot wounds.

Announcing Afghan Pullout, President Biden Asks India to 'Do More' for Kabul | Blogs/Opinions

NEW YORK – U.S. President Joe Biden has asked India and other regional countries to pitch in to help stabilize Afghanistan as Washington has decided to pull out its troops ending a 20-year-old war.
Announcing his plans April 14 to unconditionally bring home the last of the U.S. military before Sept. 11 this year, Biden said: "We'll ask other countries, other countries in the region, to do more to support Afghanistan, especially Pakistan, as well as Russia, China, India, and Turkey. They all have a significant stake in the stable future for Afghanistan."
The U.S. and NATO invaded Afghanistan after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks by Al Qaeda using hijacked aircraft on New York and Washington.
