On April 5, the Bombay High Court ordered the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to conduct a primary investigation into the allegations that Maharashtra home minister Anil Deshmukh had asked a couple of top police officials to collect Rs 100 crore per month from the bars and restaurants in Mumbai. The HC gave the CBI a fortnight’s time to complete the investigation and submit a report. Some three hours after the order, Deshmukh put in his papers, becoming the second minister after Sanjay Rathod to quit the Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (MVA) in a month following charges of illicit practices. Rathod, the former forest minister, quit on February 28 after his name came up in the suicide case of a 22-year-old girl, Pooja Chavan.
