Coroner rules Stainton builder died 50 years after asbestos exposure

Dennis Pearson worked in the building industry having started as an apprentice bricklayer with Barrow Council. The inquest at Cockermouth Coroner’s Court heard the 71-year-old died at his home in Stainton with Adgarley on December 6. He had been diagnosed with mesothelioma, which is caused by exposure to asbestos and affects the lining of the lungs, in August 2015 after visiting hospital suffering with shortness of breath. Following his diagnosis, Mr Pearson had sought to find out how he was exposed to asbestos and urged former colleagues to come forward. A statement by Mr Pearson, submitted to his legal team and read in the inquest, opened up on his time working for Barrow Corporation, which later became Barrow Borough Council, between 1964 and 1971.

Memories of Hindpool bus depot before bulldozers moved in

Barrow’s 60-year-old Hindpool Road bus depot could soon be replaced by a brand new state-of-the-art garage, reported The Mail in March 1994. Cumberland Motor Services was making plans to move its 58-vehicle maintenance and repair operation to the Project Furness site. The Hindpool Road depot had been developed by the former Barrow Corporation Transport department in the 1930s and occupied a prime town centre site. CMS operations manager Steve Barber said: “The building is years old and the engineering facilities are more suited to 1930s vehicles than those of the 90s.” Managing director Paul Southgate added: “The company has for some time been seeking to improve facilities in the Barrow area.
