Hello, everyone. And welcome back to high school. T. I m Jack Adams, and I m joined this afternoon by, uh, Southeast Gilbert, Head girls basketball coach Rachel Clarke as well as a junior guard, Sydney Roberts. I thank you all for joining me this afternoon. Thanks for having us problem. So, Sydney at the NCHS a under requiring that all players and coaches as well, where face coverings during both practices and games for you as a player, just what were some of the reactions that you and your teammates had? Plus just how y all I m adapting to that as time goes on now, uh, we don t like it. It s like you reading in like, hot air toe like my mouth gets dry, but we got used to it and the coaches make sure it s over our noses, so we should be ready by the time the games kind. You mean that s a coach just from your from your perspective. How do you think that the girls have handled all the I could ve in 19 protocols that have been in place like those mask and the limited to no summer workouts like in seasons past? Well, I know over the summer They were kind of antsy. We had just come off, you know, not being able to play the state championship game. So the summer was very weird for us. We didn t do our team camp. We didn t do our fundraiser camp, so I m sure they were growing antsy and they were calling tryingto find places the workout. But honestly, from what I ve heard, they ve handled the protocols pretty well. I actually have not been there. I ve been on a leave of absence since mid October. So they ve been working out with both Easley s and our other, um coach Leah Turner, Sydney, the Basketball State Championships, where I m initially postponed due to co vid. And then I said not to happen at all, and co champions were named for both of the girls and boys. What do you remember most about those days and weeks following the Western, a regional final when everything was turned upside down? I remember at first I was hurt because I really wanted to play and I feel like that was been that would ve been like our best game all year because they play man. I like to play against the man, but after a while, I got used to it that we were gonna play. I realized we weren t gonna play, so I was happy. We still got a ring and everything that comes with it. So I gotta find with that at this point. That s a coach. I was able to talk with Kennedy Simmons in early April. So when I coronavirus was, I sort of knew to everyone she talked about how emotional conversations were between the team when that initial news broke that. Hey, that s the image of game is not gonna happen on Saturday. And then just how things were at that time in early April, I just how difficult I was that entire process for you, a za messenger and obviously their head coach. Well, it was like a roller coaster of emotions. You know, we had a press conference in the morning and they had made some decisions. Um, that were out of our Norman out of our conference sample. We were ready to play that game. We wanted to play. So, you know, we were gonna go. We were happy to go along with the stipulations that they put in place. And then, you know, we got another press conference and then to just know that we were that close toe being ableto truly be a repeat state championship. I remember them coming to my classroom. I ve had a couch in my classroom and they were all just on the couch, just crying or just laughing. But out of anger, we were all very upset, Um, to have it just end so abruptly right there. And then that s a coach southeast. Guilford went at 31 overall, and I m a perfect 12. No, and I ment Piedmont three a conference play on the Falcons, where I m as we mentioned a couple times now a co champions at the three level. Just take me through the 1920 20 season from from your perspective as head coach, um, you know, we had all the potential of the entire time when we had a good you know, kind of relationship amongst the team members and things like that. They worked hard. They were a fun bunch, you know, We went through whatever and got through it together. So, you know, we have that one loss that made it not perfect, but who s perfect anyway, So we were okay with that one. But not getting ableto to be able to finish really was devastating. A Sydney I Do you have a favorite play, a favorite game or a moment off the court with your teammates from last winter s basketball season up there? Uh, my favorite game will be the covers in game because, uh, Elena hit that three pointer and it was close all game. The fans was into it. Yeah, that would be the best one. All of them. Eso Sydney, I know the off season is probably really different for you because of the virus. But were you able to play any travel basketball? And if so, I just had those events. Good for you personally. Um, yeah, I played a You had about six tournaments. I didn t do as well as I wanted to do. Usually, like start not so we ll not get better. But we got a little bit of tournament, so I couldn t do that this year. So all in all, it wasn t bad. I got some work in before school started, so it wasn t bad. Mhm. That s a coach losing two important players and Kennedy Simmons. Uh, now that I went to sample state as well as I reckon. Preston, who transferred. There s two combined for 34 points and 18 rebounds against Freedom and other three of West Regional Final A Tylenol. Ryan. I write for everything I shut down. Just how significant were those two departures be for the program as it moves forward? E. I mean, I think we all know it s huge. Any time I talked to the girls, you know, our team is gonna look very different. We re gonna have to utilize some other, you know, tools out of our toolbox. But we still have very talented players, and we have young players that are ready to step up. Um, Sydney knows that she s, you know, gonna be looked upon and relied on to do some of the scoring and to just make some things happen as the floor leader. So I think we ll be fine. We still got a little bit of height. Um, this is the first time that I can remember us not having a JV team on dso e Think we ve got 11 or 12 and they are already a cohesive unit. So I m very interested in looking forward to what the season is gonna look like as a coach. I Kennedy Simmons was obviously a really special player. I m not sure what her I final point count was, but she was near the top in school history. I You re familiar with that list yourself? Uh, what was it like coaching a talent? I like Kennedy s. I m over the past four years. It was like a crazy ride to see how much he grew when she started as a freshman, we couldn t get her to talk. I mean, it was like pulling teeth, and we were frustrated every day. But, you know, over the four years through birthday parties and team lunches and things like that, she became, you know, not only a scoring leader, but a team leader, period. The kids looked up to her. Um, Kennedy makes basketball a lifestyle, and that s what it takes if you wanna play at the next level. Her parents were super supportive and always there always, you know, telling me they could do whatever I needed to let them know. So Kennedy just all, all in all overall, she s just a great kid because I can t wait to see what her season looks like. This year I was so state. Okay. Eso i coach. Besides, didn t I just have some players that you re hoping to step up out on the floor off the southeastern on the upcoming season? Oh, yeah. Um, Malena read. Um said he just talked about her. She hit that three against Culbertson. You know, she s quick. She likes to play defense on she can shoot. So if we can kind of get her focused and lasered in on our plays and things like that, she s gonna be one of our main scores. Um, I rebel makayla pool on the inside. We re gonna have to look to them for rebounding and things like that. And then McKenzie Harris was our other guard. Um, so just trying to see where all the puzzle pieces fit. Those aren t the only people, but, you know, they re returning. They know what it takes to get there. And so I m looking to them to be leaders and kind of press the tempo and practice and get everybody else ready to rock and roll. Uh, so Sydney Onley lost season ago, came against the Northwest Guilford at home 72 53 s. You are going to face the Vikings early in the season. On the road, I believe January 8th is the date on that. Has that defeat lingered? Um, in memories? Or has the slate kind of been wiped clean going in to your junior season? Oh, now I remember it. Then I hope we can beat them this year. I m aiming to beat them this year since we lost last year the way we did. So yeah, it s still there. It has a good boy. That s the Sydney. The Falcons have won state titles and your freshman and sophomore seasons. Now, just how do you think Southeast? Get back to the finals and potentially cash in on a three peat in 2021? I still think we still you could still get there. We still have a pretty strong team, were new to playing together, but we still have a lot of talent and everybody got. A lot of players got better since last year, so I still think we could get there as a coach on next question for you. Southeast has been pretty dominant in the mid Piedmont three conference in the past few seasons. There are some ascending teams, like a Southwestern Randolph Asheboro as well as Williams. Just what would you say about leaks, current landscape and just what a competition is like night and night out since those games will take up mostly on schedule. Um, you know, we start off with a Spiro, and that s always a tough game for us there, you know, typically well coached. And they play hard. Either they got Diamond coming back, but we re still gonna play Southeast ball. We might have new pieces, but we re still the same and we re not gonna change. And we re just gonna, you know, work out it till we get where we need to be. But Southwest Randolph is always a hard game. Always a lot of tension with that game. Um, Southern elements. So it s anybody s game, and there s only two teams in our conference that have a JV. So we re all kind of in the same boat a Sydney, just Do you have any personal or team goals for the upcoming season? Um, I would say us playing every game hard, since we don t have as many and you never know when it s gonna get shut down and then not comparing ourselves to the other years because it s not gonna be the same. We re gonna tow, learn how to play together and do our own thing and not focus on the past. My last question is I for you, Coach. I just want you think needs to happen for our Southeast Guilford Teoh. A continuous success. I m into 2020 21 season. Obviously, I replacing a lot of pieces and having some players that I might not have had as important roles like Cindy. Step up. I m gonna be a leader. I m only as a junior. I mean, we re gonna keep looking towards that. Sydney is gonna have to grow even more, which she already has. And I could tell through interview that she is, you know, matured a lot. And she s for real about ball. So just bringing along the other kids with her staying safe, staying Covic free. Um, it s hard for us to ask. Teenagers toe on Lee be around us. But we ve all got to try to limit our exposure to everybody else so that we can stay healthy. Um, and just everybody coming together. And, you know, us being a family is the most important thing
