On Monday, the Bates Educators and Staff Organization, or BESO, filed an unfair labor practice charge against the school with the National Labor Relations Board.
The College says it hasn't seen the complaint yet so it can't comment on the allegations.
The union, the Bates Educators & Staff Organization, would be affiliated with the Maine Service Employees Association. Organizers say unionizing is an effort to improve working conditions and compensation and expand diversity efforts.
The proposed new union, called the Bates Educators & Staff Organization, would include any staff who aren't campus safety officers, tenured or tenure-track faculty, or management.
