In some of the most testing of circumstances for tourism operators across the country, Whanganui's tourism sector has come out on top, showing the most substantial growth of any district over 2020. Ethan Griffiths finds
out what's sparked it.
It was revealed this month that the district's tourism spend grew 4 per cent over the 2020 calendar year - despite New Zealand admitting almost zero tourists through its border, as well as grappling with lockdown restrictions for almost six weeks between March and May.

One of Bayleys Whanganui Vintage Weekend's events is the ever popular jigger rides, put on by the people from SteamRail Wanganui.
On a 400 metre stretch of isolated rail, the gantry road, in Taupo Quay, just outside their shed, SteamRail folk run these track inspection cars for $2 a ride. They also have the shed open for people to see what the fuss is all about.
Father and son Jamie and Hamish Coull were there, tinkering with trolleys before the event. Hamish's little dog Chi was also helping.

The Bayleys Whanganui Vintage Weekend made the most of the good weather and attracted people from all over. Vintage cars, costumes, bands, food, the ultimate variety show was out in the streets. Whanganui was packed! Paul Brooks got a few photos from Saturday's Mainstreet Whanganui Caboodle.

Current Olympic single-scull champion Mahe Drysdale's late entry into the Billy Webb Challenge on the Whanganui River added even more firepower to the 40-boat field, and crowds gathered to watch the race on Sunday.
The
Billy Webb Challenge commemorates New Zealand's first professional single-sculling world champion William "Billy" Webb's defence of his world title on the Whanganui River in 1908, in front of 25,000 spectators.
Unsurprisingly, Drysdale came home first in the men's single scull event.

Bayleys Whanganui Vintage Weekend is in full swing with thousands pouring into town for the long weekend.
Event manager Heather Cox said the cooler weather hadn't put people off attending and it was "definitely the
biggest one yet".
Cox said people in the community understood "what this event means for Whanganui".
"They want to be a part of it for the fun aspect, but also for the benefit that it'll bring to their businesses as well," she said.
