BBC warned 'of ticking time bomb' that could end broadcaster before license fee row
Lord Hall faced a number of challenges while at the helm of the BBC for eight years, before Tim Davie took over last September. Among the most crippling, was the Government's decision to waive the licence fee for over-75s – which was changed last year to only cover those on pension credits. Another was the battle to crack down on fee evasion and regaining the quarter-of-a-million people who chose not to renew their licence. Lord Hall said the BBC had considered a number of different ways to charge the public, including a means-tested system, deducting the fee from council tax and more.
