A man who illegally harvested cedar from an area of major cultural significance in B.C.'s Great Bear Rainforest has seen his fine increased more than tenfold, in a decision the Wei Wai Kum First Nation's elected chief called a "game changer."

Coast Funds, a financing group created and overseen by First Nations in the Great Bear Rainforest and Haida Gwaii, has invested tens of millions of dollars in hundreds of sustainability projects and created over 1,000 permanent jobs in local communities, according to the group's recently released report.

Vancouver Island will be in the spotlight in an upcoming Netflix documentary series titled "Island of the Sea Wolves." The docuseries is narrated by Canadian actor Will Arnett and focuses mostly on local animals, like the eponymous coastal sea wolves, the endangered and endemic Vancouver Island marmots, as well as black bears, bald eagles and sea otters.
